Walk the River Parrett
from Thorney Bridge to Muchelney
A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this magnificent walk alongside the renowned River Parret.
The Thorney Bridge/ Muchelney footpath is an invigorating flat river walk of approximately 3.5 miles and there are no stiles to contend with, only Bristol gates (a specially designed farmyard type gate which incorporates a self closing pedestrian gate providing easy access for pedestrian and dog walkers.). While this is easy walking, parts of the footpath may be overgrown (May/June), but there is always the promise of coffee, freshly made cream teas or lunch at the end which brings its own reward.
The walk may be completed in 1.25hrs, but allow 2.25hrs for chatting, kingfisher, heron and maybe otter watching,
The swans are back again this year, and at least thirty have been counted. Of course don't forget the cream teas.
And there is more.......
The adventure begins at South Petherton's Prig Lane Car Park when you board a luxury 16 seat Nippy Bus that whisks you away to Thorney Bridge, the beginning of this Somerset Level's walk.
The route follows the Parret Trail passing beautiful, unspoilt ‘Somerset Levels’ countryside as far as the Westover Bridge. From there it is a short 'road' walk to School Farm, Farm Shop and tearoom, where a variety of gastronomic delights await. School Farm is a 'no nonsense' mixed working farm, if you would like to look around just ask Helen or Graham. If you are really lucky, you may be able to help with a cow calving or feeding the pigs.
A phone call away is our local
NippyBus which will pick up the walkers and carry them homeward, to South Petherton.
