Barrington to Hambridge
from Water Street, Barrington to Hambridge via Knighton
The walk starts in Water Street, Barrington and immediately disappears into a wooded pathway and continues northward towards Hambridge, skirting the main parts of Barrington Court.
After leaving Barrington Court grounds a lane is crossed and where you find yourself in open countryside. Nearly two hundred inquisitive cows frequent these pastures and care must be taken, especially if you have a dog and calves are present.
On the right is a spendid view of Borough Hill, absolutely brilliant on a warm summers morning just after dawn.
The footpath continues north towards Hambridge, through gates and over stiles to until it crosses Barrington Broadway. At this point is the first of two obstacles, an unmangeable gate which either has to be climbed or circumvented through adjacent fields. (see pics below)
Continue north until just before meeting Knighton Drove where, the next obstacle is met, a short twenty metre section of footpath which has been blocked by a fallen building, but with care it may be clambered over (again see pics below before you commit yourself).
On the next section as many as sixteen deer have been seen together and it is worth watching out for them. After the Knighton Drove section is an interesting walk alongside the disused West Port Canal. It is not difficult to imagine this as working waterways. The canal is then crossed via a gated stone bridge.
From here the ground rises gently up towards Hambridge where the footpath originally led between two cottages and met the main road. This is now blocked and access to the main road can only be gained through farm gates into Hawkers Lane. Horses are kept here and care must be exercised.
From Hawkers lane it is a short step to the Lamb and Lion where coffee, tea or lunch.may be had while waiting for the Nippy Bus and the return journey to South Petherton.
The walk can be achieved in two and a quarter hours, but allow three plus to cater for the slowest and the pit stops along the way. The views are extensive, and on a bright summers day, the temptation will be to linger. 'Wellies' are advised if recent days have had heavy rain.
The walk has a number of Bristol and Kissing gates, a wooden footbridge and gated stone bridge. In all there are half a dozen or more stiles.
